# Create Study

Pick the study type that matches what you want to learn. There are three, and all three follow the same setup process — what differs is whether participants react to something, and what.

**In-depth Interview** is selected by default.

## The three study types

| Study type | Best for | What participants do |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **In-depth Interview** | Understanding experiences, motivations, and decisions | Talk through what they did and why |
| **Concept Test** | Reactions to an image or video | React to your concept and explain the reaction |
| **Prototype Test** | Watching people use something | Work through your prototype while narrating |

### In-depth Interview

**No stimulus required — just a conversation.** Use this when you want to learn from people's lived experience. Charles guides a focused discussion about what they did, why, and what they'd change.

Reach for it when you're doing discovery, digging into a decision moment, exploring before you commit to a direction, or hunting for unmet needs.

### Concept Test

**You have something to show.** An ad, a landing-page mockup, packaging, a feature explainer. Add the image or video, and Charles walks participants through reacting to it.

Reach for it for creative testing, messaging validation, packaging or pricing-page reactions, or A/B-style concept comparison.

### Prototype Test

**You have something to try.** A prototype, a clickable mockup, or a live site. Share the link and participants work through it while narrating their thinking.

Reach for it to validate a flow before you build it, find where people get stuck, compare an old design against a new one, or run a pre-launch usability check.

## Frequently Asked Questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can I change my study type after selecting it?">
    Yes. Click **Back** at any point during setup to return here and pick a different one.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do different study types cost different amounts?">
    No. Cost depends on the interview format — chat, voice, or video — not the study type. See [Billing and credits](/resources/billing-and-credits).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What if my research spans more than one study type?">
    Pick the one that matches your primary objective. During Step 2, tell Charles about your other objectives and he'll work them into the plan.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I show an image in an in-depth interview?">
    Yes. In-depth interviews accept concept images too, so a conversation can turn into a concept test partway through if that's what the moment calls for.
